Sensors
Landsat, MODIS, SPOT, SeaWiFS, MERIS, AVHRR, LIDAR, SONAR, and CZCS are all important sensors in the study of ecology, but it seems there is an application related to the study of ecology for data collected by virtually every sensor.
Platforms
The platforms for sensors effective in ecology range from satellites to stationary buoys. Sensors can even be mounted on animals in order to better understand their habit or to collect data from inaccessible places such as under arctic ice sheets.
Creativity seems to be the only limit to possible sensor platforms.
